Dr. Edith McCarthy, M.D. F.A.A.P.
Founder, Care Intensive Pediatrics

Dr. Edith McCarthy is the founder of Care Intensive Pediatrics, PLLC, a pediatric practice specializing in providing "intensive" medical care for infants and children who required neonatal intensive care, for reasons such as premature birth or other neonatal issues. Her goal is to set the standard in high-risk infant/child care in an effort to enhance the lives of these children and their families.

A practicing physician for 12 years, Dr. McCarthy is board-certified in both Pediatric Medicine and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine with faculty appointments at NYU Medical Center and New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. She also has admitting privileges at Mount Sinai Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital.

Dr. McCarthy received her BA degree in biology with honors from New York University before attending U.M.D.N.J.-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Soon after completing her residency in Pediatrics at Cornell Medical Center/The New York Hospital, Dr. McCarthy was appointed Instructor of Pediatrics and served as the Child Protection Representative for New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center where she became the first clinical director of The Children's Advocacy Center of Manhattan, coordinating the investigation of physical or sexual abuse of children. Dr. McCarthy's experience was further enriched by serving as community pediatrician at Watchung Pediatrics in New Jersey.

After completing her fellowship training in neonatology, Dr. McCarthy served for six years as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine, where she was in charge of critically ill newborns in the NICU at both NYU and Bellevue Hospitals. During this time, she also published her research results on the early medical treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease) in newborns using bisphosphonates.

Today, one percent of newborn babies are born high-risk due to very low birth weight, a potential outcome of assisted reproductive technology which is steadily escalating as the age of women giving birth also rises. The smallest babies (less than 1000 grams and 27 weeks gestation) are often born with special needs, ranging from minor to major physical and/or developmental delays. These children and their families typically need extra time and attention to catch up and learn how to care for their situations.

Dr. McCarthy has treated more than 15,000 infants, both full-term and pre-term, with a wide range of medical conditions, including low birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome, congenital heart disease, meconium aspiration syndrome, seizure disorders, surgical and neurosurgical cases and genetic syndromes. Combining her specialized medical training and a genuine concern for these fragile babies and their parents, Dr. McCarthy has established a specialized pediatric practice that will ease families' transition from the NICU; and where the level of care will remain attentive, constant and geared precisely to each patient's special needs. Care Intensive Pediatrics is born from her desire to create an environment that is nurturing and comfortable as well as spirit-lifting and engaging, both in terms of the personalized care provided to patients and the information available to their parents.

In addition to coordinating her patients' care with other pediatric sub-specialists, Dr. McCarthy will incorporate leading specialists in the fields of occupational therapy, psychology and nutrition as well as educational consultants skilled in neuro-psychological testing, to deliver the highest quality care to patients, ranging in age from birth to 21. Care Intensive Pediatrics is located in Manhattan at 244 East 32nd Street.
